Swimming Nappies – why they are important

It probably wouldn’t be the best idea to try and get away with popping a regular nappy on your child when it comes to swim lessons or beach days... it’s likely to end in a disaster, trust us! Regular everyday nappies are purposely designed to be super absorbent, which is obviously what you want when on dry land. However, when you're submerging your little one in water, you'll find that a regular nappy will swell up and become so waterlogged, as it absorbs the water around it. Now that’s not ideal – is it? Not only will the nappy instantly become ineffective, your little one is bound to become uncomfortable as well. Swim specific nappies are specially designed to be submerged in water and are made of different materials which are able to contain solids, whilst remaining waterproof on the outside. This is to enable comfort for your child and avoid leakages.

When selecting a swim nappy for your child, it is important to note that you should not ‘size up’ and choose one that is true to size. It is important that the nappy fits your child correctly at the time he or she is using it. This is to prevent potential mishaps in the water. Most swim nappies are designed to be snug fit and won’t swell up in water like regular nappies. There are plenty of different styles of swim nappies available so you can choose one that suits you and your child the best. You can get a swim nappy that pulls on and off like a swimsuit or one that is easily opened with Velcro-like closures. There is also the option to get disposable or reusable nappies.

Using disposable swim nappies offers convenience to parents as they are sold in most stores and are readily available. Disposable nappies are also only designed for a single use meaning you will have to purchase them regularly, and they are not environmentally friendly. On the other hand, washable swim nappies are becoming increasingly popular these days and provide a great solution where they have a waterproof outer layer and a soft lining inside against your child's skin. Reusable nappies can be removed, taken home and washed, then re-use. This option is widely available over the internet or in some stores. They are also more eco-friendly and will end up costing you less money over time. However, some cons are that they require more care, may not be sanitary and do not guarantee leakage - neither do the disposables.

Some final notes on swim nappies:

Disposable swim nappies should only be used once and then correctly be disposed of – never to be reused. Reusable swim nappies can be washed; however, it is advised that you regularly check the elastic to ensure it retains a proper fit on your child. Even though the use of swim nappies lessens the possibility of leakage, your child should be checked regularly and taken to the bathroom at least once every 30 to 60 minutes. This will prevent leakage of poop into the water.
